Tips on Preparing Professional Graphics
Abstract:
Do you find it a hassle - or even exhausting - tweaking your paper's figures
and making graphics look the way you want them to? Then this upcoming
special seminar is just for you. Our featured speakers will give tips on
creating professional figures with ease using three graphics and plotting
programs: PowerPoint, Origin, and the Visualization Toolkit (VTK). Beside
brief demonstrations from our speakers, we will also hold discussions where
we both presenters and audiences can ask/answer questions and share tips on
using the respective pieces of software.
If you are interested in knowing more about the above tools, or if you have
your own graphics tips you'd like to share with your colleagues, we look
forward to seeing you in this seminar!
3D Perspective graphics with Visualization Toolkit (VTK) [pdf]
Michael Selvanayagam
The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Electromagnetics)
Overview:
Working with electromagnetic fields in three dimensional geometries requires
a way to visualize those fields. In this brief talk Michael will introduce
the Visualization Toolkit (VTK), a free, object-oriented graphics
programming interface designed for 3D graphics. He will go over the basics
of VTK and give a few examples of how it can be used.
Graphics with Microsoft PowerPoint [pptx] [wmv]
Xiao Sun
The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Photonics)
Overview:
Knowing a few graphics tips with PowerPoint can help you generate
professional-looking 3D structures of optical elements (objective lenses,
integrated circuits, etc.) in the matter of a few minutes. Xiao will
demonstrate these tips and show us how to draw an objective lens in the
seminar.
Simple, Efficient Plotting with Origin [pdf] [wmv]
Muhammad Alam
The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Photonics)
Overview:
Alam will show us the basic plotting capabilities of the Origin software. He
will show how professional looking plots can be made with ease and
flexibility, making the software favourable compared to other alternatives
like Microsoft Excel.
